Fishing in North Wales - caters for every ability

Last updated: 13 July 2023

Previously: 4 September 2021

Maybe it’s a pastime you’d like to revisit or an activity you’ve never tried before - a getaway in North Wales is the perfect opportunity to wind your reel out, so to speak.

We have a number of suggestions but don’t just limit your options to rivers, lakes or reservoirs - why not try sea fishing (and it’s a good excuse to enjoy the splendour of our coastline).

If you’re well versed in the art of fishing, we’ve also included a couple of places where you can browse for fishing equipment and purchase bait.

We advise you to check out each website before planning your fishing trip. Pre-booking is often a requirement to comply with the most recent Welsh Government review.

Go fishing!

Lake fishing in North Wales won't disappoint

Llyn Leisure and Rural Services, Pwllheli,
At Llyn Leisure you can enjoy fantastic lakes from which to fish. Located on the Llyn Peninsula you can find Llyn Leisure in Bodrydd. The natural grassy banks and beautiful bays make the lakes a tranquil and relaxing place to set up for the whole day. Night fishing is also available to those that have completed a day trip on site and has been approved by the lakes' management.

Llyn Brenig Fisheries, Cerrigydrudion, Corwen
Keen anglers are attracted to the impressive shoreline which extends for 14 miles around the Llyn Brenig lake. The still water lake covers 920 acres and is well stocked with rainbow trout.

Llandegla Fishery, Wrexham
Settled within the countryside of Wrexham, there are a number of lakes catering for various types of fishing and for all levels of ability. There are two trout pools - you’ll find rainbow, brown, tiger and gold trout here to really test your skills.

Graiglwyd Springs, Penmaenmawr, Conwy
Located in the picturesque village of Penmaenmawr, Graiglwyd Springs has the reputation for being one of the best trout fisheries in the area and attracts national attention.

You don't need to be an expert angler

Llyn Guides, Bala
The area provides for various types of angling - grayling fishing (winter), game fishing or trout fishing in the hill lakes. By pre-arrangement, you can fish in small groups, gain confidence and expertise whilst enjoying the spectacular scenery around you.

Tyddyn Sargent Coarse Fishery, Benllech
Resting within Snowdonia National Park and a mile from Benllech Beach, you can enjoy fishing at your own pace, immersed in the beauty of the Snowdonia landscape.

Cefni Angling Association, Llan Cefni, Llangefri
Anglers can enjoy various disciplines at Cefni Angling - trout, fly and bank fishing can all be arranged but check their website for current guidelines. There’s plenty of wildlife to observe too, so if some of your party would just prefer a walk around the lake, the advice is to take binoculars!

Glasfryn Parc, Pwllheli
Fishing on the Llyn Peninsula means freshwater lakes with plentiful supplies. The lakes are fed naturally from the river springs and the lakes provide carp, tench, perch, roach and rudd. Glasfryn Parc also offers other activities - there’s an aquapark, kayaking, paddle boarding, go-karting, clay pigeon shooting, ten pin bowling and archery and more.

Eisteddfa Fishery, Criccieth
Enjoy a lovely day out surrounded by beautiful countryside at Eisteddfa Fishery. Based near the North West Wales coast, the fishery caters for families, novices and experts. There are 3 lakes - one is a family lake, another is a trout lake. You can purchase a family ticket which includes all bait and tackle and covers the licence if you don’t have one.

Angling in the hills of Wales

Tan Y Mynydd Trout Fisheries, Abergele, Conwy
The fishery has 5 lakes, stocked with trout - brown, tiger, rainbow and blue. There’s a couple of beginner’s lakes so those new to angling can happily learn the craft of coarse fishing to gain confidence before trying out other methods.

Conwy Water Gardens and Coarse Fishery, Conwy
Open from dawn until dusk, all year round, Conwy Water Gardens offers fantastic coarse fishing. There are 3 lakes in plentiful supply of perch, chub, orfe, barbel, tench, bream, carp, roach and more.

Crafnant Trout Fishery, Trefriw
Set within the Snowdonia National Park, the lake spans 63 acres and is well stocked with rainbow trout.

Alwen Reservoir, Corwen
The reservoir offers a great location from which beginners can master angling. The numerous secluded bays offer peace and solitude for anglers from which to catch rainbow trout and perch.

Llyn Aled, Pentrefoelas
Located high in the Hiraethog hills, the lake is stocked with various varieties including perch, pike and roach and keen coarse fishing anglers will be left undisturbed. It does get a little windy as the spot is 250m above sea level but the remoteness is idyllic.

Llyn Trawsfynydd
Situated in the beauty of Snowdonia National Park, Llyn Trawsfynydd is a favourite with anglers due to the stunning views and the amount of wildlife on show. It’s also played host to angling competitions. Rainbow and brown trout can be fished here.

Sea and Beach Fishing

Llandudno Pier

Start out at Llandudno Pier to fish mackerel, pollock and dogfish then move on further afield to Colwyn beach for a larger variety of fish. Conwy River is also nearby if you still have a couple of hours to spare.

Pwllheli Beach
The harbour channel offers a great opportunity to fish bass, although it’s probably better to fish here out of high season due to the large amount of marine traffic during the summer months. The beach offers a good variety of fish including black bream, mackerel, gurnard and dogfish.

Starida Puffin Fishing Trips, Beaumaris, Anglesey
Fishing around the island of Anglesey is considered to be one of the best experiences of sea fishing around the welsh coastline. Not only does Anglesey provide a great day out, but there is a plentiful variety of fish to try and catch.

Fishing at Shell Island, Llanbedr
Sea fishing in Cardigan Bay offers the choice of bass, mackerel and plaice and more. Various trips can be booked and the cost will include equipment hire and bait sufficient for the tip. Beginners are welcome and instructors are on board to offer valuable advice and guidance.

Equipment, tackle and bait

If you’re planning a sea fishing expedition off the North Wales coast, then pop in to Rhos Fishing Tackle & Bait for your supplies. Stock is aplenty and there’s a choice of fresh and frozen bait. There’s a range of angling equipment to choose from to ensure your sea fishing trip is a success.

There’s also a great bait and tackle shop on the site of Conwy Water Gardens.

If you’re planning a fishing trip near Rhyl, then Harry’s Tackle & Bait shop has everything you could possibly need from sea fishing products to clothing and angling equipment.

Our location provides our guests with plenty of choice of fishing destinations.

Don’t worry if you’re a beginner - there are plenty of lakes and sea fishing tours which cater for the uninitiated.

All you need is a willingness to learn, enthusiasm and probably lots of patience!
